Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of organs and structures inside your body. This guide from First Care Medical Lab explains different types of scans, preparation tips, and what to expect.

Types of Ultrasound Scans
Pregnancy Scan (dating, anomaly, growth), Abdominal Scan (liver, gallbladder, kidneys), Pelvic Scan, Breast Scan, Prostate Scan, Thyroid Scan, Doppler Scan (blood flow), and Echocardiography (heart).
How to Prepare
Abdominal Scan: You may need to fast for 6–8 hours and drink water to fill your bladder. Pelvic Scan: A full bladder is usually required. Pregnancy Scan: Drink water before early pregnancy scans. Your booking confirmation will include specific preparation instructions.
What to Expect
The scan is painless and non-invasive. A gel is applied to the skin and a probe (transducer) is moved over the area. The scan typically takes 15–30 minutes. Results are usually available immediately.
